Today group A went up the mountain. Standing at the bottom
we peered into the distance unsure of which way to go, but we knew we had to
get to the top. After studying the map, Mollie and Katie led the way, but
towards the steepest part of the mountain and the sheep. Can we stroke them
please, Mr. Judd, we all asked? After deciding that wasn’t a good idea, we headed
up the valley. Finally we had climbed 200m in 40 minutes, hard work but
worthwhile when we turned to see the view. After a more leisurely walk we
reached the summit, 680m above sea level. We then spent some time flying kites
before Triston led us back to the van for a well-deserved cup of hot chocolate.
Today Group B got, you would never believe, wet, cold, tired
and scared, and loved every minute of it! We joined up with Group F and headed
for the magnificent waterfalls of the Brecon Beacons. However, unlike the other
sensible people we met, who were walking around the falls, taking photos of
them, commenting on their wondrous beauty etc. we climbed them, walked through
them and slid down them, getting absolutely soaked in the process. It was not all fun and games, though. We had
to have nerves of steel as we clambered up slippery rocks and across rocky
outcrops which had the consistency of sheet ice. We also had to work as a team
to make sure that everyone moved together and in safety. Just another normal
day at Glasbury…
Groups C and D were lucky to spend the day together on the
water canoeing, which meant a mix-up of group members and the opportunity to
spend time with different friends. The day started slowly with preparation of
the canoes and barrels carrying all of our lunches as we hauled them down to
the river, one by one. Once on the river, we got off to a flying start,
learning how to steer and paddle. Due to the low level of water in the river,
most groups, unfortunately, became stuck at one point or another. This, however, was very
quickly solved by most of the boys in the group who could not wait to throw
themselves in the water to push the canoes free. After stopping for lunch on
the bank of the river, we made our way towards the mini buses that were waiting
to pick us up, but not before jumping in the river riding down the rapids on
our backs. 3 activities down and 2 to go…
Today, group E went adventuring. We went through an old
train tunnel that used to be used to transport coal. It was pitch black. We had
to hold the shoulders of the person in front of us. When we came out it started
to rain. Next we zip wired down a hill, it was so fun!! After eating lunch, we
got in the mini bus and went to a river. Then we walked down to the river and
started walking through the river, we all fell over at least twice! At some
points it got thigh deep and our boots filled up. We then got to a small
waterfall and had to walk around it. We got soaked. Afterwards, we sat on a
ledge and had to shuffle along it under a waterfall. None of us made it. Soaked
and tired, we walked back to the mini bus.
Today group F also went to visit the waterfalls and, like
every other group, we spent the day trying to get as wet as possible! We walked
behind waterfalls and slid down the streams and, even though we were warned
that the stones were very slippery, we all managed to fall over. Fall-of-the-day
award goes to Jake! We were lucky enough to spend lunchtime watching the
wonders of the waterfalls and met up with Group B for part of the day. All in
all, a very wet day!
